September Is Live.
Wednesday Decides.
Week of August 10 — PANW · SUZ · BX
For the first time this cycle the market's base case is a rate hike — and the July CPI print lands Wednesday, mid-week. Three setups built as three different answers to that one question.[cite: 4]
The Fed put September on the table
The July 29 FOMC held at 3.50–3.75% for a fifth straight time, but the vote was 9–3 — Hammack, Kashkari and Logan dissenting for an immediate hike, the most dissents since September 2016[cite: 4]. BMO's Ian Lyngen read it as a committee with vocal hawks whose majority sides with Warsh only until September, when it will have the July and August CPI reports in hand[cite: 4].
Markets have moved: futures now price roughly 56% odds of a September hike against ~44% for no change[cite: 4]. Inflation has run above target for some 63 months and oil has topped $100 a barrel on the Middle East conflict[cite: 4]. July CPI lands Wednesday, August 12 at 8:30am ET — the first of the two prints the committee is waiting on, right after Friday's jobs report[cite: 4].
A hot print likely cements a September hike; a soft one buys Warsh time and takes pressure off long-duration assets[cite: 4]. With minimal forward guidance from this Chair, one release carries more weight than any speech between now and September 15–16[cite: 4].
So the list is built as three different answers to the same question: a high-multiple momentum leader with the most to lose, a deep-value commodity producer that barely correlates with the index, and a beaten-down alternative manager with the most torque to relief[cite: 4]. One of them reports on CPI morning.[cite: 4]
A Second Set of Eyes on This Market: Puddle Jumper

PANW posts the most extreme number this newsletter has published: a 40.46 profit factor — past the 39.48 we flagged two weeks ago as the record here — plus the best annualized return (102.3%) and win rate (76.92%) on the list[cite: 4]. It sweeps three of four categories[cite: 4].
The business justifies much of it[cite: 4]. Palo Alto is the platform leader in enterprise cybersecurity and has become a preferred way to own the AI security theme: more capable models mean more attack surface and more spend[cite: 4]. Remaining performance obligations have grown ~36%, it expanded its AT&T collaboration in late July, and target raises have been relentless — Capital One upgraded to Overweight at $421, Tigress to $430, BofA to $420, Barclays to $370[cite: 4]. The stock is up more than 85% over the past year[cite: 4].
PANW trades near $363, essentially at its all-time high of $381 — and above the average analyst target of roughly $325–$337.[cite: 4] Consensus is still "Buy" and the bulge-bracket targets are catching up fast, but the average analyst thinks this is at or past fair value[cite: 4]. Valuation is extreme: a trailing P/E in the 300s, forward P/E near 90, roughly 25× sales[cite: 4]. This is expensive momentum — exactly what a hot CPI print punishes first[cite: 4].
Fiscal Q4 expected mid-to-late August — the company confirmed on Aug 3 it would release results; trackers differ between ~Aug 17 and Aug 24, so verify[cite: 4]. Either way it reports after this week's window opens[cite: 4].
The most rate-exposed name here in the way that matters: a very high-multiple growth stock whose valuation depends on a friendly discount rate[cite: 4]. A hot Wednesday print and a firming September hike compress exactly this multiple[cite: 4]. The offsets are a powerful secular demand story and momentum that has repeatedly outrun its own targets[cite: 4].
PANW sweeps profit factor, annualized return and win rate — the strongest statistical profile we've published — on a genuine AI-cybersecurity leader with relentless target raises[cite: 4]. The counterweight: all-time highs, above the average target, forward P/E near 90, into a CPI print that could punish premium multiples[cite: 4].
Different Market, Different Tool
PANW is a momentum name; Suzano is a deep-value one. Not every setup fits every trader — or every week.[cite: 4]
Puddle Jumper is another scan from the SmartTrading team. See the page for what it looks for and how it works.[cite: 4]
Take a Look at Puddle JumperThe deep-value counterweight
SUZ carries the highest frequency on the list at 85.71% and a solid 11.95 profit factor — but its 72.7% annualized return and 70% win rate are the softest of the three[cite: 4]. Worth stating plainly: this is where the fundamental case and the chart disagree most sharply[cite: 4].
Suzano is the world's largest pulp producer — a vertically integrated Brazilian forestry company running eucalyptus into market pulp, fluff pulp, paperboard and tissue[cite: 4]. Q1 delivered an all-time record in pulp sales, and on July 1 it closed a $1.3B majority-stake JV with Kimberly-Clark's tissue business, now operating as Arbex — a new global tissue and hygiene leader originally announced as a $3.4B deal[cite: 4]. The board also approved a non-dilutive capital increase via tax-incentive reserves[cite: 4].
The stock sits near $8.20, close to its 52-week low of ~$7.55 and far below the $11.53 high — about 4.5× earnings against an average target near $12.57 (~50%+ implied upside)[cite: 4]. But BofA downgraded to Neutral and cut its target to $11 from $15 after lowering its long-term pulp price assumption from $600 to $550/tonne, and a stronger Brazilian real has compressed EBITDA even as volumes set records[cite: 4]. Pulp is a real commodity cycle, and this is a trough[cite: 4].
With a beta near 0.10, SUZ barely moves with the S&P at all — rare on a week when one inflation print may whipsaw the whole index[cite: 4]. And it reports the same morning as the CPI release, which cuts both ways: a genuine double catalyst and a genuine double risk[cite: 4].
Expected Wednesday, August 12, 2026 — the same day as July CPI, and inside this week's window[cite: 4]. Some trackers list an earlier August date, so verify[cite: 4].
The closest thing here to a hedge: a hard-asset commodity producer with minimal market correlation on a mid-single-digit multiple[cite: 4]. Far less exposed to the discount rate than PANW or BX — its swing factors are global pulp prices and the Brazilian real, not the Fed[cite: 4]. The cost of that independence is the lowest win rate on the list[cite: 4].
Best frequency here and a genuinely cheap, record-producing business with a new $1.3B tissue JV and ~50% analyst-implied upside[cite: 4]. But the lowest win rate, near 52-week lows in a pulp downcycle with a fresh BofA downgrade, reporting on CPI morning[cite: 4]. A near-uncorrelated counterweight — sized for a commodity trough[cite: 4].
Beat big, still beaten down
BX brings an 84.21% frequency, an 8.71 profit factor and a 93.53% annualized return — second-highest on the list — with a 72.22% win rate[cite: 4]. No category win, but a strong balanced profile attached to the sharpest disconnect of the three[cite: 4].
Blackstone is the world's largest alternative asset manager, and its July 23 quarter was emphatic: distributable earnings rose 26% to $2.0B, or $1.52 per share against a $1.33 consensus — a 13% beat.[cite: 4] AUM hit a record $1.35 trillion (+11%) on nearly $70B of quarterly inflows and $262.5B over the trailing year; fee-related earnings rose 22% to $1.8B[cite: 4]. Schwarzman positioned the firm as "one of the largest private capital providers in the AI ecosystem," with data centers, energy and frontier AI driving growth — and the $1.29 quarterly dividend is payable August 10, right at the start of this week[cite: 4].
The market shrugged: shares closed slightly down on the print near $122, against a 52-week high of $190 — roughly a third below highs despite record AUM[cite: 4]. Analysts raised targets across a wide band: RBC to $169 and TD Cowen to $145 (bullish) against Goldman at $127 and Barclays at $128 (neutral)[cite: 4]. Skeptics point to leverage, a dividend critics argue isn't comfortably covered by free cash flow, and a five-year earnings record that has actually declined even as recent trajectory improved[cite: 4].
Reported July 23, 2026 — a 13% distributable-earnings beat with record AUM[cite: 4]. The $1.29 dividend is payable Aug 10. No print this week; the window opens behind the catalyst[cite: 4].
The highest-torque name if Wednesday's print comes in soft[cite: 4]. Alternative managers live on the cost of capital — private equity, real estate and private credit all get easier when rates stop rising and harder when they resume[cite: 4]. A hawkish CPI is a direct headwind; a cool one a direct tailwind, into a stock already heavily discounted[cite: 4].
Second-best annualized return here and the sharpest fundamentals-versus-price disconnect: record $1.35T AUM, a 26% earnings gain and a 13% beat, yet a third below its highs[cite: 4]. The most rate-sensitive name on the list — clearest beneficiary of a soft CPI, most exposed to a hot one. Watch the leverage and dividend-coverage critiques[cite: 4].

The Big Picture
Three names, deliberately chosen as three different answers to a single question: what does Wednesday's inflation print do to the cost of money?[cite: 4]
These three do not rise and fall together, and that is the entire design[cite: 4]. If July CPI runs hot and September firms up, PANW's premium multiple and BX's rate sensitivity both take the hit — while SUZ, at a mid-single-digit multiple with a beta near 0.10, is largely indifferent[cite: 4]. If the print comes in soft, BX has the most room to recover and PANW's momentum gets a green light[cite: 4]. You are not being asked to guess the number — you are being handed three positions that respond to it differently[cite: 4].
The goal is never to predict the week perfectly[cite: 4]. Seasonality gives you the roadmap; the data and earnings calendars give you the catalysts; the Fed backdrop tells you which risks to size carefully[cite: 4]. From there: watch the price action, respect your stops, and refuse to let emotion decide[cite: 4].
